Why is it important to learn C# and .NET development if my focus is MS SQL Server BI? Which one should I learn first to get a job faster?

Well, SQL by itself is kind of useless. You generally need some kind of code to generate queries, and to process and display results or to execute transactions. That implies leaning one or more programming languages. Whether that language is C# or something else tends to be application & environment specific. As to .NET, that’s a framework that supports multiple languages - again, whether .NET makes sense is application & environment dependent.---Miles Fidelman, Systems Architect, Entrepreneur

If you are planning on just being a BI developer then why bother learning .net and c#? It isn't like you get paid more money for having more skills - this is true? However, if you are to have a deeper understanding of software development and to remain relevant not getting pigeonholed, being able to deal with .net developers and not get taken in by a lot of false impositions it makes sense to learn .net. I found it infuriating listening to c# developers mutual back-slapping each other dismissing a need for proper data modelling and database development whilst at the same time BI developers with no coding skills writing monolithic hard coded long stored procedures. Both of these types are a menace to IT and it is important to gain an appreciation of the other. Which one to learn first I wouldn't class them as different - .net is the framework and c# is the language of choice these days.---Zak Willis, CEO and Director
